From Dent to Showroom-Ready: What Actually Happens Inside a Car Body Shop

A dent looks simple from the outside. Fixing it properly, so it never shows again, usually isn't.

The Dent Isn't the Real Damage

Most people bring a car in for "just the dent" and are surprised when the estimate covers more than the dent. That isn't upselling. A dent is rarely just a dent. It can crack the paint around it, disturb the primer underneath and, in sharper impacts, affect panel alignment. A proper repair deals with all of that, not just the visible dip.

Here's what the process involves, step by step.

Step 1: Assessment

Every affected panel is checked for the dent itself, for cracked paint around it, for alignment with neighbouring panels, and for whether the damage is cosmetic or structural. This decides whether it's a paintless dent repair case or a full panel-beating and repaint job.

Step 2: Dent Correction

Where the paint hasn't cracked, technicians can often work the metal back into shape from behind the panel without repainting. It's faster and keeps the original factory paint. Where the paint has cracked or the metal needs more aggressive correction, the panel is reshaped with body tools before moving on to surface prep.

Step 3: Surface Prep

This step decides how good the final paint looks, and it's the one most often rushed at lower-quality shops. It involves sanding, filling where needed and priming to build a smooth, even base. Rush it, and even expensive paint will show flaws in direct sunlight.

Step 4: Colour Matching

Factory paint isn't one fixed formula. Batch variation and age-related fading mean the same colour on a five-year-old car isn't identical to the factory code. Proper colour matching accounts for that, usually by testing on a sample panel first, so the repaired panel doesn't stand out next to the rest of the car.

Step 5: Paint and Clear Coat

The base colour goes on first, then a clear coat that adds gloss and UV protection. Dust or temperature swings during this step cause the orange-peel texture and uneven gloss you see on poor repaints, which is why it should be done in a controlled paint environment.

Step 6: Quality Check and Buffing

Once cured, the panel is inspected under direct and angled light for texture, gloss and blend with surrounding panels, then buffed to match the rest of the car.

FAQs

## FAQs

Can a dent be fixed without repainting?

Yes, if the paint hasn't cracked and the damage is purely a change of shape, paintless dent repair can correct it while keeping the original factory paint.

How do body shops match paint on an older car?

Technicians account for fading and batch variation by testing the match on a sample area first, instead of relying only on the factory colour code. A car five years or older has usually shifted slightly from new.

How long does dent repair and repainting take?

It depends on the damage. A single panel with no structural involvement is quicker than multi-panel or structural repair. Ask for a timeline once the assessment is done.

What's the difference between dent repair and complete body restoration?

Dent repair fixes specific damaged panels. Complete body restoration covers accident and collision repair or full-body work across the car, and takes correspondingly longer.
